After the storm, a clear next step.
Hail, high winds and heavy rain can damage a roof in minutes. Here’s what to do next.
Four steps after a storm.
Stay safe first
Stay off the roof and away from fallen lines or sagging ceilings. If there is immediate danger, call emergency services.
Document from the ground
Take photos of visible damage, debris and any interior leaks from a safe spot. Note the date of the storm.

What to look for.
From a safe place.
Missing, lifted or dented shingles and panels
Hail marks on vents, gutters and flashing
Granules collecting in gutters or downspouts
Water stains on ceilings or in the attic
Loose or bent flashing around chimneys and skylights
Fallen branches or debris on the roof
Different storms.
Different damage.
Damage depends on your roof’s material, condition and exposure. These are possible warning signs—not a diagnosis.
Hail impacts
Hail can dent metal panels and roof accessories, crack tiles, or damage the protective surface of shingles. Some impacts are difficult to identify from the ground; dents alone do not establish whether a roof leaks or needs replacement.
Wind damage
Strong gusts can lift shingles, loosen fasteners and flashing, or damage ridge caps and roof edges. Wind-driven rain may enter at vulnerable transitions even when the main roof surface looks intact.
Heavy rain & debris
Blocked gutters, damaged drainage and fallen branches can allow water to collect or enter the building. New ceiling stains, damp insulation and recurring drips deserve attention, even if the rain has stopped.
Look beyond the obvious.
An inspection helps identify visible concerns and the next steps for your property. Access, weather and safety conditions may limit what can be checked.
Roof surfaces & edges
Accessible roof areas are checked for damaged or displaced materials, impact marks, exposed fasteners and changes at ridges, hips and valleys.
Flashing & penetrations
Chimneys, skylights, vents and roof-to-wall connections are reviewed for loose metal, damaged seals and gaps that may let water in.
Drainage & leak clues
Gutters, downspouts and accessible leak areas are reviewed to help trace water paths. Interior or attic access is discussed with you beforehand.
Discuss the findings, any areas needing further investigation, and repair or replacement options. Confirm the proposed materials, scope, pricing and schedule in a written quote before authorizing work.
Small damage can become a big leak.
Damage that looks minor can let water reach the roof deck, insulation and interior. An inspection soon after a storm helps you understand what needs attention before the next rain.
